Today, I want to share with you 4 common mistakes you need to avoid if you want to make sales in your Etsy shop.

Most people fail at Etsy because they don’t have a plan and not having a plan leads to tons of unnecessary mistakes.

Not having a plan kills your chances at making sales

If you make these mistakes, your Etsy shop will likely never take off. Let’s go over them so you don’t make them.

The 4 common Etsy mistakes you need to avoid:

  1. Selling what you want instead of what the market wants
  2. Trying to be like everyone else
  3. Treating your shop like a hobby instead of a business
  4. Having poor listing photos

Let’s dive in.

Mistake #1: Selling what you want instead of what the market wants

Having interest in what you sell is important but it’s only half of the equation. Passion alone isn’t the magic ingredient for success on Etsy.

Let me clarify. Etsy is a marketplace. If you’ve chosen it as your selling platform to reach its customer base, then you need to meet its rules.

Skipping market research is a mistake. It could cost you time, money, and effort. You don’t know if there’s demand for your Etsy offerings. So, you might be investing in something that won’t yield sales.

To make consistent sales on Etsy, you must know what people want. You must also sell something that excites you. This is what I like to call finding your “Sweet Spot”.

Here’s a perfect example. Selling butterfly quilt patterns on Etsy wouldn’t work. No one searches for that.

Mistake #2: Trying to be like everyone else

To make sales on Etsy you need to be different. If your product looks like your competition, why would a customer want to buy from you versus them?

You don’t have to reinvent the wheel and make a new product. But, you do need to think about what makes your products different from your competitors. Think about what makes your product unique. Think about how it helps your ideal customer solve their current problem.

For example, a customer is looking for t-shirt mockups. They need ones that work for their plus size brand.

Mistake #3: Treating your shop like a hobby instead of a business

If you’ve started an Etsy shop that means you are a business owner, so you need to treat your shop like a business. A big mistake sellers make is that they don’t take their shop seriously. They treat it like a hobby thus getting “hobby-like” results.

When I started my Etsy shop, I went into it with a business mindset. I didn’t look at it as a hobby and went all in.

“The degree of dedication influences the outcomes achieved.”

Mistake #4: Having poor listing photos

Your listing photo is the first thing customers see. They see it when searching on Etsy for things to buy. If your listing photo isn’t eye-catching, customers won’t click on it. So, you need to find ways to make your photos stand out.

Understand who your ideal customer is and what they like.

For example, if you are selling resume templates to sorority girls, you may want to create listing photos that would attract them. Put your thinking cap on and search Google. See if there are any sorority brands you can research. Find out what that demographic likes. Then, make your listing photos with those elements.

And those are the 4 common mistakes I see Etsy sellers making . I hope this issue helps you become more aware of what you may be doing wrong and ways to fix the issue.

That’s all for today.

See you next week.
